Description
A playful crochet project to create small fall-themed gnomes using recycled plastic bottles.
Ingredients
- Worsted weight yarn, weight 4 medium, about 120 yards total (80 yards main color, 40 yards hat color)
- H-8 (5.0 mm) crochet hook
- One clean, dry 16-ounce plastic bottle (with label and cap removed)
- Polyester fiberfill, about 2 ounces (57 g)
- Small piece of tan or cream felt for the beard
- Yarn needle
- Sharp scissors
- One stitch marker (optional)
- Tape measure
- Small amount of craft glue (optional)
Instructions
- Chain 30, then join with a slip stitch to the first chain, being careful not to twist the chain.
- Chain 1, work 1 single crochet into each chain around, then join with a slip stitch to the first single crochet.
- Place a stitch marker in the first single crochet, work 1 single crochet in each stitch around for 18 rounds.
- Work 1 single crochet in the next 3 stitches, then work a decrease over the next 2 stitches; repeat around for 24 stitches.
- Work one single crochet in each stitch around for the next round.
- Work 1 single crochet in the next 2 stitches, then decrease over the next 2 stitches; repeat around for 18 stitches.
- Stuff a small amount of polyester fiberfill into the top, not hard packed.
- Work 1 single crochet in the next stitch, then decrease over the next 2 stitches; repeat around for 12 stitches.
- Cut the yarn, leaving an 8-inch tail, and pull the tail through the remaining stitches to close.
- Make the hat using contrast yarn with a magic ring, work 6 single crochet into the ring.
- Work the hat in continuous rounds, increasing as specified until the desired length is achieved.
- Position the hat over the bottle body, sew the hat brim to the body, and add the felt beard below the hat.
Notes
Use caution with direct heat on acrylic. For cleaning, spot clean or hand wash gently. Store upright or folded gently.
