Description
Crochet a playful Halloween spiral garland with simple US stitches, small stuffed motifs, clear stitch counts, care instructions, and gentle customization ideas.
Ingredients
- Worsted weight yarn (weight 4, medium), acrylic, about 330 total yards (302 m): approximately 100 g orange, 100 g black, and 30 g cream or white
- H-8 (5.0 mm) crochet hook
- Polyester fiberfill, about 2 ounces (57 g)
- Yarn needle with a blunt tip
- Sharp scissors
- Tape measure
- Stitch markers (optional)
- A small amount of cardboard, about 4 inches (10 cm) wide (optional)
Instructions
- Begin each small motif with a magic ring. Wrap the yarn around two fingers, insert the hook into the ring, and pull up a loop. Chain 1, then work 6 single crochet (sc) into the ring. Pull the yarn tail gently to close the center, then slip stitch (sl st) into the first sc.
- For round 2, chain 1. Work 2 sc into each stitch around. Join with a sl st to the first sc for 12 stitches.
- For round 3, chain 1, then repeat single crochet in the first stitch and an increase in the next stitch around. Join with a sl st for 18 stitches.
- For rounds 4 through 7, chain 1 and work 1 sc in every stitch around. Join each round with a sl st. Each round has 18 stitches.
- Stuff the motif lightly after round 7. Add small pinches of polyester fiberfill rather than one large piece.
- For round 8, chain 1, then repeat 1 sc and 1 decrease around. Join with a sl st for 12 stitches. Add a little more stuffing if the center looks hollow.
- For round 9, chain 1 and work a decrease around. Join with a sl st for 6 stitches, cut the yarn, leaving a 10-inch (25 cm) tail. Weave through the front loops of the remaining stitches, pull the opening closed, and knot securely. Make three motifs in orange, black, or cream.
- Make each vine strip with a foundation chain of 26. For the first row, work 1 half double crochet (hdc) in the third chain from the hook, then 1 hdc in each chain across. Turn the work and chain 2, then work 2 hdc in each stitch across. Fasten off, leaving a 10-inch (25 cm) tail. Make three strips.
- Arrange the three motifs and three spirals on a table before sewing. Sew each piece to the central area of its neighboring strip using the yarn tails.
- Make the hanging chain. Chain 109, then fasten off, leaving a 10-inch (25 cm) tail at each end.
- Lay the motifs and spirals along the chain, then sew them in place with the tails you saved. Weave in every remaining end.
- Block the fabric if needed and reshape the spirals with your fingers.
Notes
Small parts and long loose strands are unsafe for children under three, so display this garland out of their reach. Use caution while using hot iron near acrylic.
