Description
This beginner-friendly crochet pumpkin is made with simple ridged rows and offers a soothing crafting experience as you create a soft, rounded form suitable for autumn decor.
Ingredients
- Worsted weight yarn, weight 4 medium, acrylic, about 125 yards total
- H-8 (5.0 mm) crochet hook
- Yarn needle for sewing seams and weaving in the ends
- Scissors
- Stitch marker (optional)
- Tape measure
- Polyester fiberfill, about 2 to 3 ounces
- Small cinnamon stick, twig, or crocheted yarn stem (optional)
Instructions
- Make the foundation chain: Make 22 chains, keeping it relaxed.
- Work Row 1: Yarn over, insert the hook into the second chain, work 1 half double crochet in each chain across, then make 1 turning chain and turn.
- Work the rectangle: For Rows 2 through 25, make 1 half double crochet in the back loop of every stitch across, making 1 turning chain and turn after every row.
- Join the long edges: Fold the rectangle so the short ends meet and sew the long edges together with a whip stitch or mattress stitch.
- Gather one end: Thread the needle with a long yarn tail and weave it in and out around one open edge, pulling the yarn slowly until the opening closes.
- Stuff the pumpkin: Turn the piece right side out and add small handfuls of polyester fiberfill.
- Gather the second end: Weave around the remaining opening, pull it closed, and knot securely.
- Add the stem: Secure a small cinnamon stick, twig, or crocheted yarn stem in the top with a few firm stitches.
Notes
Use caution if using small stems, as they can create a safety risk for children under three. Store the pumpkin in a breathable basket, and keep leftover yarn with its label for future projects.
