Description

Create charming cheesecloth ghosts that glow gently, perfect for adding a soft seasonal touch to your home decor during autumn gatherings.

Ingredients

  • Worsted weight cotton yarn, about 120 yards total (or one 3-ounce (85 g) skein)
  • H-8 (5.0 mm) crochet hook
  • Yarn needle for weaving in the ends
  • Small scissors
  • Tape measure
  • Stitch marker (optional)
  • One or two cool, battery-operated tea lights (optional)
  • Small piece of cardboard (optional)

Instructions

  1. Make a foundation chain of 22.
  2. Row 1: Make 1 half double crochet in the second chain from the hook and in each chain across. You will have 21 half double crochets.
  3. Chain 1 to turn. Turn your work and make 1 half double crochet in each stitch across.
  4. Rows 3 through 15: Repeat Row 2. Each row has 21 half double crochet.
  5. Row 16: Chain 1 and turn. Make 1 single crochet in the first stitch, 1 single crochet in the next stitch, then 2 single crochets in the next stitch. Repeat across, ending with 1 single crochet in the final stitch. You will have 28 single crochet.
  6. Rows 17 and 18: Chain 1 and turn. Make 1 single crochet in each stitch across.
  7. Fold the rectangle so the first row meets the last row, with the right side facing inward.
  8. Join the side edges with slip stitches.
  9. Turn the ghost right side out.
  10. Thread the yarn needle with an 18-inch length of cotton yarn. Weave in and out around the top edge, gently pulling the opening closed.
  11. Stitch across the gathered top several times, then make a chain of 14. Join the end of the chain to the top with a slip stitch, fasten off, and weave in the ends.
  12. Finish the ghost by weaving in every yarn tail with the yarn needle.
  13. If your cotton looks rumpled, block it by lightly misting it, shaping it with your fingers, and letting it dry flat.

Notes

Keep the lights and cords secure and away from young children and pets. Hand washing is recommended for care.
