- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 1 cup corn syrup
- 1/2 cup water
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon of flavoring (vanilla, peppermint, or your favorite)
- Food coloring (optional)
- Butter or cooking spray (for greasing)
- A large saucepan
- A candy thermometer
- A marble or countertop for cooling
Instructions
- Grease your marble or countertop with a little butter or cooking spray.
- Combine the sugar, corn syrup, water, and salt in a large saucepan.
- Place the saucepan over medium heat and allow it to boil without stirring.
- Watch the temperature rise with a candy thermometer and remove from heat at 260°F (hard ball stage).
- Carefully pour the hot mixture onto your greased countertop.
- Allow the candy to cool for a few minutes until it is comfortable to touch.
- Coat your hands with butter, then begin to knead the taffy, pulling and folding.
- Add flavoring and food coloring as desired, continuing to knead.
- Pull the taffy into ropes and cut into small pieces.
- Wrap each piece in wax paper or parchment for storage.
Notes
Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week. For longer storage, wrap tightly in wax paper and refrigerate.
