Description

This little ghost is a calming crochet project that can be completed over several quiet evenings or in a longer afternoon. Perfect for adding a seasonal touch to your home.

Ingredients

  • About 90 yards of worsted weight (weight 4, medium) acrylic yarn, from one skein of about 100 yards per 50 g skein
  • H-8 (5.0 mm) crochet hook
  • Polyester fiberfill, about 1 ounce (28 g)
  • Yarn needle with a blunt tip
  • Small scissors
  • One stitch marker (optional)
  • Tape measure
  • Black embroidery floss or a small amount of black worsted weight yarn
  • Embroidery needle

Instructions

  1. Make a magic ring, chain 1, then work 6 single crochet stitches into the ring. Pull the yarn tail to close the center and place a stitch marker in the first stitch.
  2. Round 2: Work 2 sc in each stitch around. Move the marker to the first stitch of the new round.
  3. Round 3: Work 2 sc in the first stitch, then 1 sc in the next stitch. Repeat around.
  4. Round 4: Work 2 sc in the first stitch, then 1 sc in each of the next 2 stitches. Repeat around.
  5. Round 5: Work 2 sc in the first stitch, then 1 sc in each of the next 3 stitches. Repeat around.
  6. Round 6: Work 2 sc in the first stitch, then 1 sc in each of the next 4 stitches. Join with a slip stitch to the first stitch or continue in a spiral.
  7. Rounds 7 through 15: Work 1 sc in each stitch around for 9 rounds, maintaining 36 stitches.
  8. Round 16: Work 1 sc in each of the first 4 stitches, then make a decrease over the next 2 stitches. Repeat around.
  9. Round 17: Work 1 sc in each of the first 3 stitches, then decrease over the next 2 stitches. Repeat around.
  10. Begin stuffing with small pinches of polyester fiberfill, pushing it toward the top.
  11. Round 18: Work 1 sc in the first 2 stitches, then decrease over the next 2 stitches. Repeat around.
  12. Round 19: Work 1 sc in the first stitch, then decrease over the next 2 stitches. Repeat around.
  13. Round 20: Work a decrease over the next 2 stitches around. Fasten off, leaving a yarn tail about 10 inches long. Weave it through the front loops of the remaining stitches to close.
  14. Weave in the tail and trim the excess. Use black embroidery floss to stitch small eyes and a mouth.
  15. For small arms, attach yarn at one side of the body, chain 6, slip stitch back along the chain. Fasten off and repeat on the other side.

Notes

You can make the ghost with different yarn to vary the size and texture. Ensure that the stuffing does not show through when using a loose stitch.
