Description

This little crocheted pumpkin uses a simple rectangle shape that transforms into a charming fall decoration. It’s perfect for beginners and can be crafted at a leisurely pace, making it a soothing project for cozy evenings.

Ingredients

  • Worsted weight yarn (weight 4, medium), acrylic, about 160 yards total, or one skein of about 170 yards per 100 g skein in pumpkin orange, rust, cream, or another seasonal shade.
  • H-8 (5.0 mm) crochet hook.
  • Polyester fiberfill, about 2 ounces (57 g).
  • Yarn needle with a blunt tip.
  • Small scissors.
  • One stitch marker (optional).
  • Tape measure.
  • Small amount of brown, tan, or green worsted weight yarn for the stem, about 12 yards.

Instructions

  1. Make a slip knot, then chain 29.
  2. Row 1: Yarn over, insert your hook into the second chain from the hook, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over again and pull through all three loops on your hook to make one half double crochet (hdc). Work 1 hdc in each chain across for 28 hdc.
  3. Chain 1 to turn, then make 1 hdc in the back loop only (BLO) of each stitch across for a total of 28 hdc.
  4. Repeat Row 2 until you have 25 rows total.
  5. Fasten off, leaving a yarn tail about 18 inches long.
  6. Fold the rectangle so the first and last rows meet, and sew the short edges together with a whip stitch or mattress stitch using the long tail.
  7. Weave the needle around the top edge of the tube, passing through the end of each row and gather the opening, leaving a small opening for stuffing.
  8. Add polyester fiberfill in small handfuls, filling the outer edges first and the center last.
  9. Continue gathering the top opening until it closes, making several firm stitches to secure.
  10. For the stem, make a magic ring and chain 1, work 6 single crochet (sc) into the ring, then work 2 rounds of 6 sc. Slip stitch into the next stitch to finish, and sew the stem to the center top of the pumpkin.
  11. To create the pumpkin grooves, thread a long strand of orange yarn onto the needle and pass it from the center top through the center bottom. Wrap it around the outside and pull gently, forming one section. Repeat around the pumpkin every 1 to 1 1/2 inches.
