Description
A simple shoulder bag with a firm fabric, comfortable strap, and enough room for a phone, card holder, and keys.
Ingredients
- 180 yards of worsted weight yarn (weight 4, medium), preferably cotton or a cotton blend
- One H-8 (5.0 mm) crochet hook
- Yarn needle for sewing the side seams and weaving in the ends
- Scissors
- Tape measure
- Two stitch markers (optional)
Instructions
- Make the foundation chain: Chain 34. This chain measures about 9.5 inches (24 cm) with the stated gauge.
- Work the first row: Hdc in the second ch from the hook and in each ch across. You will have 33 hdc.
- Begin the textured rows: Ch 1, turn your work. Work one hdc in the back loop only, or BLO, of every stitch across. You will have 33 hdc.
- Repeat the body rows: Repeat step 4 for 34 more rows, for 36 rows total after the foundation row. Each row has 33 hdc.
- Check the rectangle: Lay the piece flat without stretching it. It should measure close to 9.5 inches wide by 14.5 inches long (24 cm by 37 cm).
- Mark the fold: Place the rectangle with the textured side facing you. Fold the bottom edge upward about 6.5 inches (16.5 cm). Place a stitch marker through both layers on each side.
- Sew the pocket sides: Thread the yarn needle and sew through both layers with mattress stitch or neat whipstitch, working toward the top of the pocket.
- Make the strap: Join yarn at one upper side of the bag with a secure sl st. Chain 101 for a strap of about 38 inches (96.5 cm). Sc in the second ch from the hook and in each ch across.
- Attach the strap: Sew one end of the strap to each upper side of the bag just below the flap fold.
- Shape the flap: Fold the upper section over the pocket.
- Finish the fabric: Weave in the ends and block the bag if necessary.
Notes
Choose a smooth cotton worsted weight yarn for better structure and washing. Make a small gauge swatch to ensure desired size.
