Description
Make a tiny ghost dog amigurumi that is soft and perfect for Halloween decorations. The gentle repetition in crocheting this little creature brings a soothing rhythm to your crafting.
Ingredients
- Worsted weight yarn (90 yards, weight 4, medium), preferably acrylic (ivory or white for the body, small amounts of black and a contrast color for the collar)
- H-8 (5.0 mm) crochet hook
- Polyester fiberfill (about 2 ounces)
- Yarn needle with rounded tip
- Small scissors
- Two stitch markers (optional)
- Tape measure
- Two 9 mm safety eyes or black embroidery floss
- Black embroidery floss for nose and mouth
- Small scrap of worsted weight yarn for collar (optional)
Instructions
- Make a magic ring, crochet 6 single crochet (sc) into the ring and pull the tail gently to close.
- Place a stitch marker in the first stitch of the round. Round 1: 6 sc.
- Work the increase rounds in continuous spirals.
- Round 2: increase in each stitch around, for 12 sc.
- Round 3: repeat 1 sc in the next stitch and 2 sc in the next stitch around, for 18 sc.
- Round 4: repeat 1 sc in each of the next 2 stitches, then increase in the next stitch around, for 24 sc.
- Round 5: repeat 1 sc in each of the next 3 stitches, then increase in the next stitch around, for 30 sc.
- Round 6: repeat 1 sc in each of the next 4 stitches, then increase in the next stitch around, for 36 sc.
- Round 7: repeat 1 sc in each of the next 5 stitches, then increase in the next stitch around, for 42 sc.
- Rounds 8 through 15: sc in each stitch around, for 42 sc in every round.
- Add the eyes between rounds 11 and 12, about 9 stitches apart.
- Round 16: repeat 1 sc in each of the next 5 stitches, then decrease over the next 2 stitches around, for 36 sc.
- Round 17: repeat 1 sc in each of the next 4 stitches, then decrease around, for 30 sc.
- Round 18: repeat 1 sc in each of the next 3 stitches, then decrease around, for 24 sc.
- Round 19: repeat 1 sc in each of the next 2 stitches, then decrease around, for 18 sc.
- Round 20: repeat 1 sc in the next stitch, then decrease around, for 12 sc.
- Round 21: decrease around, for 6 sc. Cut the yarn, leaving an 8-inch tail, and use the yarn needle to thread through the front loops of the remaining 6 stitches. Pull closed and secure.
- Make each ear with a small rectangle. Chain 9, then sc across for 8 sc. Chain 1 to turn, then work 8 sc for 8 rows total. Fasten off, leaving a 10-inch sewing tail.
- Fold each ear lengthwise, stitch the side edges together lightly, and sew the ears to the head between rounds 5 and 9.
- Make the tail by chaining 7, then slip stitching in the second chain from the hook and in each remaining chain. Fasten off with a 6-inch tail and sew the tail to the back of the body around round 13.
- Add the face by using black embroidery floss for a triangular nose between the eyes and a short mouth line below it.
- Wrap a narrow strip of contrast yarn around the neck for a collar and tie it securely, or crochet a chain of 22 and fasten it around the neck.
- Weave in the ends with the yarn needle and shape the dog with your hands.
- Check that the stuffing feels even.
Notes
The finished ghost dog is small enough to sit on a mantel or bookshelf, and it can be adapted in size and color if desired. Always ensure safety eyes are securely attached if the toy may be given to a child under three.
