Description

A small seasonal crochet project that makes a charming bat for Halloween decoration or as a handmade gift.

Ingredients

  • 110 yards of black worsted weight yarn (weight 4, medium)
  • H-8 (5.0 mm) crochet hook
  • Small amount of white worsted weight yarn for the eyes, about 6 yards
  • Small amount of pink or gray worsted weight yarn for the mouth or ears, about 4 yards
  • Polyester fiberfill, about 1.5 ounces (43 g)
  • Yarn needle with a blunt tip
  • Sharp scissors
  • One stitch marker (optional)
  • Tape measure
  • Two small felt circles or embroidered eyes (optional)

Instructions

  1. Form a magic ring. Chain 1, then work 6 single crochet (sc) into the ring. Pull the yarn tail gently to close the center, then join with a slip stitch (sl st) to the first single crochet.
  2. Chain 1, then work 2 single crochet in each stitch around. Join with a slip stitch to the first single crochet.
  3. Chain 1, then repeat single crochet in the next stitch and 2 single crochet in the following stitch around. Join with a slip stitch.
  4. Chain 1 and work 1 single crochet in each stitch around for 8 rounds.
  5. Chain 1. Work 1 single crochet in the next stitch, then make a decrease over the following 2 stitches. Repeat around and join with a slip stitch.
  6. Add polyester fiberfill through the open end, filling the body gently.
  7. Chain 1, then work a decrease over the next 2 stitches around. Join with a slip stitch. Cut the yarn, leaving an 8-inch tail.
  8. Thread the tail through a yarn needle and pass it through the front loops only of the remaining stitches, pulling the opening closed.
  9. Chain 10 for the foundation chain for the first wing. Work 1 half double crochet (hdc) in the third chain from the hook, then 1 hdc in each remaining chain across.
  10. Chain 2 and turn. Work 2 hdc in the first stitch, 1 hdc in the next stitch, 2 hdc in the next stitch, and 1 hdc in each remaining stitch across.
  11. Chain 2 and turn. Work 1 hdc in each of the first 3 stitches, then work a double crochet in the next stitch. Chain 2, then work a slip stitch into the next stitch. Finish with 1 hdc in each remaining stitch across.
  12. Chain 1 and turn. Work 1 single crochet in each stitch and chain-2 space across the top edge. Fasten off with a 10-inch tail.
  13. Repeat for the second wing using the same instructions.
  14. Sew the wider edges of both wings to the back of the body.
  15. Embroider small eyes and a tiny mouth with yarn.
  16. Check for missed stitches, loose tails, and weave in the ends securely.

Notes

Ensure no loose small parts if a young child might handle the bat.
