Description
A fun and fulfilling project to create vibrant flower sun catchers using recycled plastic bottles.
Ingredients
- Clear plastic bottles (empty and clean)
- Scissors (for cutting the plastic)
- Acrylic paints (vibrant colors recommended)
- Paintbrushes (preferably of varying sizes for detail)
- A sponge or sponge brush (for a textured painting effect)
- String or fishing line (for hanging)
- A lighter (optional, for smoothing edges)
- A small bowl of water (for rinsing brushes)
- Optional: glitter or metallic paints for accents
Instructions
- Prepare your workspace. Lay down some newspaper or an old cloth to protect your surfaces. Create a cozy setting with soft lighting and a calming playlist, if you like.
- Cut the bottles. Carefully use your scissors to cut the plastic bottles into flower shapes. You can create petals by cutting the bottle horizontally and shaping them as you desire. Feel the smooth edges as you shape the petals.
- Shape the petals. If you like, use a lighter to gently melt the edges of the petals, giving them a softer, rounded look. Be cautious and mindful, allowing the warmth of the flame to guide your hand while handling the lighter carefully.
- Paint the flowers. Choose your acrylic paints and begin applying color to your flower shapes. Use strokes that feel good to you, allowing the paint to flow onto the plastic. A sponge brush gives a lovely textured finish if you desire.
- Add details. Once the base colors are dry, add any desired accents using fine brushes or glitter where you feel a little sparkle would bring joy. Let your creativity shine.
- Create the hanging mechanism. Take a piece of string or fishing line and attach it to the top of your flowers. You can punch a small hole or use hot glue to secure it—whatever feels natural for you.
- Hang your sun catchers. Find a sunny spot near a window, perhaps a place where you often sit. Hang your creations where they can catch the light and fill the space with color.
Notes
These sun catchers are easy to make and bring a splash of color to your home. They are also a great project to engage kids in art and recycling.
