Description
Make a soft crochet ghost with calm, clear steps, US terms, simple shaping, and gentle care notes for a sweet handmade Halloween decoration.
Ingredients
- 80 yards of worsted weight (weight 4, medium) acrylic yarn
- H-8 (5.0 mm) crochet hook
- Small amount of black embroidery floss or smooth black yarn for the face
- 1 ounce (28 g) of polyester fiberfill
- Yarn needle with a blunt tip
- Sharp scissors
- Stitch marker (optional)
- Tape measure
- Small scrap of cardboard (optional)
Instructions
- Make a magic ring, also called a magic circle, by wrapping the yarn around two fingers, inserting your hook into the center, and pulling up a loop.
- Chain 1, then work 6 single crochet into the ring. Pull the yarn tail to close the center.
- For Round 2, work an increase in every stitch (2 single crochet into one stitch). You will have 12 stitches at the end of the round.
- For Round 3, work 1 single crochet in the first stitch, then an increase in the next stitch. Repeat around. You will have 18 stitches.
- For Round 4, work 1 single crochet in each of the first 2 stitches, then an increase in the next stitch. Repeat around for a total of 24 stitches.
- For Rounds 5 through 10, work 1 single crochet in every stitch around. Each round has 24 stitches.
- Begin the shaping for the lower edge. For Round 11, work 1 single crochet in each of the first 2 stitches, then a decrease over the next 2 stitches. Repeat around for 18 stitches.
- For Round 12, work 1 single crochet in the first stitch, then a decrease over the next 2 stitches. Repeat around for 12 stitches.
- Pause and add small pinches of polyester fiberfill, moving it around with the blunt end of your yarn needle.
- For Round 13, work a decrease over the next 2 stitches around. You will have 6 stitches.
- For Round 14, work 3 decreases around. You will have 3 stitches. Cut the yarn, leaving a 6-inch tail.
- Thread the tail onto your yarn needle, pass it through the remaining stitches, and pull gently to close the opening.
- Weave in the ends by passing the yarn needle through several nearby stitches on the inside of the ghost.
- Make the face with black embroidery floss or smooth black yarn. Use a few small stitches for two eyes and a tiny curved stitch for the mouth.
- Shape the bottom with your fingers and let the ghost rest upright.
Notes
Acrylic yarn does not need wet blocking. If you use a fiber that reacts well to blocking, lightly shape it without heat before adding the face. Keep small parts away from children under three.
