Description
This pumpkin coaster is a simple crochet project that provides a calming rhythm as you create a useful item for fall, perfect for holding underneath warm mugs or adding seasonal decor to your home.
Ingredients
- Worsted weight cotton yarn (about 35 yards total)
- H-8 (5.0 mm) crochet hook
- Yarn needle
- Small scissors
- Tape measure
- Optional stitch marker
- Two yarn colors (optional for contrasting stem or border)
Instructions
- Create a slip knot and place it on your H-8 (5.0 mm) hook. Chain 16.
- Yarn over, insert the hook into the second chain from the hook, yarn over again, and pull up a loop. Yarn over once more and pull through all three loops on the hook to make one half double crochet. Work 1 hdc in each chain across, chain 1 to turn, and turn the work. Stitch count: 14 hdc.
- For Row 2, work 1 hdc in the back loop only (BLO) of each stitch across. Chain 1, turn. Stitch count: 14 hdc.
- Repeat Row 2 for Rows 3 through 10. Each row uses 1 hdc in the BLO of every stitch, followed by chain 1 and a turn. Stitch count after Rows 3 through 10: 14 hdc per row.
- After Row 10, the rectangle should measure close to 4.5 inches wide by 4 inches tall. Press the piece gently between your palms if it curls.
- Optionally, join a contrasting yarn at one top corner with a slip stitch, chain 3, and work 2 single crochet stitches into the same corner area for a stem.
- Optionally, join yarn at one corner and work a single crochet around the edges. Finish with a slip stitch to the first single crochet and fasten off.
- Cut the yarn, leaving a 5-inch tail. Weave in the ends by moving the needle through several stitches on the wrong side, changing direction once, then trim the excess.
- If needed, dampen the coaster, shape it, and let it dry flat to block.
Notes
This project is beginner-friendly and can produce multiple coasters from a single skein. The coaster will provide a small point of interest in seasonal decor and can be made in various colors.
