Description
Create a soft garland of crocheted pumpkins that brings a gentle touch of autumn to your home decor. This easy project is perfect for teens and can be completed in a few evenings.
Ingredients
- 6 skeins worsted weight cotton yarn (about 85 yards per 50 g skein, 510 total yards, 300 g)
- small amount of worsted weight brown cotton yarn for stems (about 10 yards)
- G-6 (4.0 mm) crochet hook
- about 3 ounces (85 g) polyester fiberfill
- yarn needle
- sharp scissors
- 6 stitch markers (optional)
- tape measure
- small tray or bowl for holding stuffing and yarn tails
Instructions
- Make a magic ring with the orange yarn. Work 6 single crochet stitches into the ring, then pull the yarn tail to close the center.
- Work 2 single crochet stitches in each stitch around. You now have 12 stitches.
- Work 1 single crochet in the first stitch, then make 2 single crochet stitches in the next stitch. Repeat this pattern around. You now have 18 stitches.
- Work 1 single crochet in each stitch around for the next 5 rounds. Each round has 18 stitches.
- Begin shaping the top. Work 1 single crochet in the first stitch, then make a decrease over the next 2 stitches. Repeat around for a total of 12 stitches.
- Add a small amount of polyester fiberfill before the opening becomes too narrow, filling lightly at first.
- Work 1 single crochet in the first stitch, then make a decrease over the next 2 stitches. Repeat for a total of 8 stitches.
- Make 4 decreases around for a total of 4 stitches. Fasten off, leaving a yarn tail about 8 inches long.
- Thread the tail onto the yarn needle and weave it through the front loops of the remaining stitches to close the opening.
- For the pumpkin divisions, thread a long strand of orange yarn onto the yarn needle. Bring the needle from the bottom center to the top center, wrapping the yarn around the outside of the pumpkin.
- Create the stem with brown yarn by chaining 5, slip stitching in the second chain from the hook and in each remaining chain. Fasten off with a 6-inch tail.
- Sew the stem to the top of the pumpkin with the yarn needle and weave in the ends.
- Repeat the body and stem instructions to make a total of 6 pumpkins.
- To create the garland, cut a long strand of brown yarn (about 60 inches), threading it through the top of each stem and spacing pumpkins about 6 inches apart.
- Weave in every remaining end with the yarn needle.
