Description
This Crochet Dog Sweater Pattern is a small, useful project for making a cozy garment for your dog during cool walks and chilly evenings. The soothing rhythm of crocheting helps create a practical piece without fussy details.
Ingredients
- Worsted weight (weight 4, medium) acrylic yarn, about 340 yards total, or two 170-yard, 100 g skeins
- H-8 (5.0 mm) crochet hook
- Yarn needle, blunt tip
- Scissors
- Tape measure
- Two optional stitch markers
Instructions
- Measure around your dog’s neck, then chain 11 for a collar about 2 inches tall.
- Work one single crochet in the second chain from the hook and in each chain across. You will have 10 stitches. Chain 1, and turn.
- For rows 2 through 28, work one single crochet in the back loop only of each stitch across, chain 1, and turn at the end of every row.
- Bring the first and last rows together to form a tube using slip stitches.
- Work 28 single crochet stitches evenly around the top edge of the collar, joining with a slip stitch.
- Begin the body with a round of half double crochet: chain 1, work one half double crochet in each stitch around, and join with a slip stitch.
- Repeat the half double crochet round for 10 rounds, chaining 1 at the start of each round.
- Shape the leg openings by working the next round in sections: chain 1, work 8 half double crochet stitches, chain 4 for the first opening, skip 4 stitches, work 8 half double crochet stitches, chain 4 for the second opening, and join with a slip stitch.
- Work the next round carefully by making 8 half double crochet stitches across the first section, work 4 half double crochet stitches into the first chain-4 opening, and continue with the rest as per pattern.
- Work 6 more rounds of half double crochet in each stitch around, checking the fit over your dog’s back.
- Add the lower edge by chaining 1 and working single crochet in each stitch around for 2 rounds.
- Count the stitches at the end of the last round to check for mistakes.
- Fasten off and weave in the ends with the yarn needle.
Notes
Check the fit often while crocheting, and let your dog wear the finished sweater for a few minutes to ensure comfort before longer wear.
