Description
A small, useful crochet project that allows for a steady rhythm of stitching, perfect for slow days. This project results in a square that can be used as a cozy accent and makes a thoughtful gift.
Ingredients
- 340 yards worsted weight yarn (weight 4, medium), preferably cotton or a cotton-rich blend
- H-8 (5.0 mm) crochet hook
- Yarn needle
- Small scissors
- Tape measure
- Two stitch markers (optional)
Instructions
- Gather your yarn, H-8 (5.0 mm) hook, scissors, yarn needle, and tape measure before you begin.
- Make a foundation chain of 42. Keep the chain relaxed rather than pulling each loop tight.
- Row 1: Yarn over, insert your hook into the second chain from the hook, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over again, then pull through all three loops on the hook. Work 1 hdc in each chain across. Chain 1 and turn. You have 41 hdc.
- Row 2: Work 1 hdc in the first stitch and in every stitch across. Insert your hook under both top loops unless the pattern tells you otherwise. Chain 1 and turn. You still have 41 hdc.
- Rows 3 through 29: Repeat Row 2. Each row ends with 41 hdc, and the piece should measure close to 12 inches square when your gauge matches.
- After Row 29, measure the piece without stretching it. It should be about 12 inches by 12 inches (30 cm by 30 cm).
- Fasten off by cutting the yarn and leaving a tail about 6 inches long. Pull the tail through the final loop to secure it.
- Weave in the ends with a yarn needle. Trim close to the fabric only after the yarn feels secure.
- Block the piece if it needs help becoming square. Lightly dampen the cotton, smooth it flat on a towel, and ease the corners into shape. Leave it flat until fully dry.
Notes
This project is suitable for a confident beginner and involves a simple pattern of half double crochet. The finished piece can serve multiple purposes and is suitable for gifting.
