Description
Create a practical dog backpack and harness with this calming and beginner-friendly crochet pattern.
Ingredients
- Worsted weight (weight 4, medium) cotton-acrylic blend yarn, about 340 yards total (or two 170-yard skeins of 100 g each)
- H-8 (5.0 mm) crochet hook
- Yarn needle with a blunt tip for weaving in ends
- Sharp fabric scissors
- Two stitch markers (optional)
- Tape measure for checking gauge and measuring the dog's chest and back
- Two small buttons or two smooth wooden rings (optional)
Instructions
- Make a foundation chain of 28 chain stitches.
- Chain 2 to create the turning chain. Work 1 double crochet in the third chain from the hook and in each chain across. You will have 26 double crochet stitches.
- Turn your work. Chain 2, then work 1 double crochet in each stitch across.
- Repeat this row 10 times total to reach Row 12, ending with 26 double crochet stitches.
- For Row 13, chain 2 and work 2 double crochet in the first stitch, then 1 double crochet in each stitch across, ending with 2 double crochet in the last stitch (28 double crochet stitches).
- For Rows 14 through 18, chain 2, turn, and work 1 double crochet in each stitch across, maintaining 28 double crochet stitches.
- For Row 19, chain 2 and work 1 double crochet in each stitch across. Chain 12 for the first strap extension, work 1 slip stitch in each of those 12 chains, then slip stitch into the last double crochet of the row.
- Fasten off the first side and rejoin yarn at the opposite upper corner for the second strap extension. Chain 12, work 1 slip stitch in each chain, and slip stitch into the corner stitch.
- For the back strap, chain 32 stitches. Work 1 single crochet in the second chain from the hook and in each chain across (31 single crochet stitches).
- Chain 1 and turn, then work 1 single crochet in each stitch across for 4 rows.
- Attach the strap to the side extensions with slip stitches or firm sewing, ensuring it fits the dog properly before adding buttons or rings.
- Sew buttons or wooden rings securely to the marked edge.
- Weave in the ends with the yarn needle and lightly block the fabric.
