Description

Create your own mesmerizing lava lamp using common household items and explore the wonders of density and chemical reactions.

Ingredients

  • Clear plastic bottle or glass jar (empty and clean)
  • Water
  • Vegetable oil (such as canola or olive oil)
  • Food coloring (your choice of colors)
  • Alka-Seltzer tablets or baking soda
  • Funnel (optional)
  • Spoon (for stirring)

Instructions

  1. Remove any labels from your bottle. Rinse well with water and dry thoroughly.
  2. Using a funnel (if needed), pour water into the bottle until it’s about one-quarter full.
  3. Slowly pour vegetable oil into the bottle until it is almost full, leaving some space at the top.
  4. Add several drops of food coloring to the mixture.
  5. Break an Alka-Seltzer tablet into a few pieces and drop one piece into the bottle.
  6. When the reaction slows down, add more Alka-Seltzer as needed to keep the fun going!

Notes

Experiment with different colors of food coloring for creative looks. For a glittery effect, add a teaspoon of glitter before adding the Alka-Seltzer.
