Description
Create a small, useful crochet basket for Halloween candy or small treasures using a simple pattern and cozy yarn.
Ingredients
- Worsted weight yarn (weight 4, medium), acrylic, about 160 yards total from one 3.5-ounce (100 g) skein
- Optional second color in worsted weight yarn, up to 35 yards for stripes or a contrasting handle
- H-8 (5.0 mm) crochet hook
- Yarn needle for weaving in ends
- Scissors
- Stitch marker (optional, but helpful for marking the first stitch of each round)
- Tape measure
Instructions
- Make a magic ring.
- Chain 1, then work 6 single crochet stitches into the ring.
- Pull the ring closed, slip stitch to the first single crochet, and mark the first stitch.
- Round 1: 6 single crochet.
- Chain 1. Work 2 single crochet in each stitch around, place marker in the first stitch. Round 2: 12 single crochet.
- Chain 1. Repeat single crochet in the next stitch, then 2 single crochet in the following stitch around. Round 3: 18 single crochet.
- Chain 1. Repeat single crochet in each of the next 2 stitches, then 2 single crochet in the next stitch around. Round 4: 24 single crochet.
- Chain 1. Repeat single crochet in each of the next 3 stitches, then 2 single crochet in the next stitch around. Round 5: 30 single crochet.
- Chain 1. Repeat single crochet in each of the next 4 stitches, then 2 single crochet in the next stitch around. Round 6: 36 single crochet.
- Chain 1. Work 1 half double crochet in each stitch around. Round 7: 36 half double crochet.
- Chain 1. Work 1 half double crochet in each stitch around for the next seven rounds. Rounds 8 through 14: 36 half double crochet each.
- Make the handle on Round 15: Chain 1, work 1 half double crochet in each of the first 9 stitches, chain 12, skip the next 6 stitches, and work 1 half double crochet in each of the remaining 21 stitches.
- Round 16: Chain 1 and work 1 half double crochet in each of the first 9 stitches. Work 12 half double crochet around the chain space, then work 1 half double crochet in each of the remaining 21 stitches.
- Finish with a slip stitch in the next stitch, cut the yarn, and pull the tail through the final loop.
- Use a yarn needle to weave in the ends, passing each tail through several stitches in different directions before trimming it.
- Check the finished size and shape the basket with your hands.
Notes
This pattern uses US crochet terms. Make a gauge swatch if you can spare twenty minutes. Block the basket cold by lightly dampening it and letting it dry in shape.
