Description

Transform old crayons into stunning suncatchers that add a splash of color to your home while recycling waste.

Ingredients

  • Crayons (broken or whole)
  • Pencil sharpener (optional)
  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper
  • Cookie cutters (or silicone molds)
  • Oven
  • Scissors (for trimming if needed)
  • String or fishing line (for hanging)

Instructions

  1. Prepare Your Workspace: Clear a flat surface and gather all your materials. Preheat your oven to 200°F (93°C) for melting the crayons.
  2. Shave the Crayons: Use a pencil sharpener to create shavings of crayon, or chop them into small pieces with a knife. Mix different colors to explore vibrant new shades!
  3. Set Up Your Baking Sheet: Line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and make cleanup easier. Place your cookie cutters or silicone molds on the parchment.
  4. Fill the Molds: Sprinkle the crayon shavings inside each mold, filling them about halfway. For a layered effect, add a base layer of one color, followed by another color on top.
  5. Melt the Crayons: Carefully place the baking sheet in the preheated oven. Allow the crayons to melt for about 10-15 minutes, watching closely to avoid burning.
  6. Cool and Remove: Once melted, remove the baking sheet from the oven and let it cool completely. Gently pop the suncatchers out of the molds once they have hardened.
  7. Trim and Hang: If necessary, use scissors to trim any excess edges. Attach string or fishing line for easy hanging.

Notes

Experiment with color mixing and different shapes to create unique designs. Use solar ovens for an outdoor crafting option!
