Description

Ingredients

  • 2 ½ cups all purpose flour
  • 1 ¾ cups granulated sugar
  • ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs (room temperature)
  • 1 cup neutral oil (like canola or vegetable)
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon black gel food coloring
  • 1 teaspoon white vinegar
  • 1 cup hot coffee or hot water

Instructions

  1. Prep your pans and oven. Heat oven to 350°F. Grease your cake pans and line the bottoms with parchment.
  2. Mix dry ingredients. In a large bowl, whisk flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Mix wet ingredients. In another bowl, whisk sugar, eggs, oil, buttermilk, vanilla, vinegar, and black gel coloring.
  4. Combine. Pour wet into dry and whisk just until combined. Then whisk in the hot coffee or hot water.
  5. Bake. Divide batter into pans. Bake about 25 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out with a few moist crumbs.
  6. Cool and frost. Cool in pans for 10 minutes, then turn out onto a rack to cool completely before frosting.

Notes

Use gel food coloring for better color. Do not skip the hot coffee or hot water for deeper cocoa flavor. Ensure ingredients are at room temperature for smoother batter.
