Description
This project results in a small crocheted pumpkin hanging with a simple leaf and stem, suitable for various autumn displays.
Ingredients
- Worsted weight cotton yarn, weight 4 medium, orange, approx. 90 yards for the pumpkin
- Worsted weight cotton yarn, weight 4 medium, green, approx. 20 yards for the leaf
- Worsted weight cotton yarn, weight 4 medium, brown or black, approx. 15 yards for the stem and hanging loop
- One H-8 (5.0 mm) crochet hook
- Polyester fiberfill, approx. 1 ounce (28 g) for stuffing the pumpkin
- Yarn needle with a blunt tip for weaving in ends
- Scissors
- One stitch marker (optional)
- Tape measure for checking gauge and finished size
Instructions
- Make a magic ring with orange yarn. Chain 1, then work 8 half double crochet into the ring. Pull the yarn tail to close the center, slip stitch into the first half double crochet, and place your stitch marker at the start of the next round.
- For Round 2, chain 1, then work 2 half double crochet in each stitch around. Slip stitch to the first half double crochet and move the marker.
- For Round 3, chain 1 and repeat increase around by working 2 half double crochet in each stitch. Join with a slip stitch.
- For Round 4, chain 1, then repeat around: 1 half double crochet in the next stitch, 2 half double crochet in the following stitch. Join with a slip stitch.
- For Round 5, chain 1, repeat around: 1 half double crochet in each of the next 2 stitches, followed by 2 half double crochet in the next stitch. Join with a slip stitch.
- For Rounds 6 through 12, chain 1 and work 1 half double crochet in every stitch around. Join each round with a slip stitch and move your marker.
- For Round 13, chain 1, then repeat around: half double crochet in the next 6 stitches, followed by a half double crochet decrease over the next 2 stitches. Join with a slip stitch.
- For Round 14, chain 1, then repeat around: half double crochet in the next 5 stitches, followed by a half double crochet decrease over the next 2 stitches. Join with a slip stitch.
- For Round 15, chain 1, then repeat around: half double crochet in the next 4 stitches, followed by a half double crochet decrease over the next 2 stitches. Begin adding polyester fiberfill now.
- For Round 16, chain 1, then repeat around: half double crochet in the next 3 stitches, followed by a half double crochet decrease over the next 2 stitches. Add enough stuffing to make the pumpkin rounded.
- For Round 17, chain 1, then repeat around: half double crochet in the next 2 stitches, followed by a half double crochet decrease over the next 2 stitches. Join with a slip stitch.
- For Round 18, chain 1, then repeat half double crochet decrease around. Join with a slip stitch.
- Finish with a little more fiberfill if the center looks hollow, then cut the orange yarn, leaving a 10-inch tail.
- Thread the yarn needle with the orange tail and weave through the front loops of the remaining 12 stitches. Pull gently to close the opening, then make several small securing stitches.
- Make the leaf with green yarn. Chain 7. Single crochet in the second chain from the hook, half double crochet in the next chain, double crochet in the next 2 chains, half double crochet in the next chain, single crochet in the last chain. Chain 1 and work back along the other side of the foundation chain.
- Make the stem and hanging loop with brown or black yarn. Chain 9 for the loop, slip stitch into the first chain to form a circle, then chain 5 for the stem. Work 4 single crochet back along those 5 chains, slip stitch into the center of the hanging loop.
- Sew the stem and leaf to the top of the pumpkin with the yarn needle.
- Finish by weaving in the ends and trim the excess.
Notes
This pattern uses US crochet terms. The pumpkin may be adjusted for size and shape by changing yarn and hook size, or by modifying the increase rounds.
