Description
Make a simple 12 by 16 inch crochet piece with worsted weight yarn, using half double crochet rows. This project is designed for a relaxing crafting experience.
Ingredients
- Worsted weight yarn, weight 4 medium, acrylic, about 340 total yards, or two 170-yard skeins of about 3.5 ounces (100 g) each
- H-8 (5.0 mm) crochet hook
- Yarn needle for weaving in the ends, blunt tip with a large eye
- Scissors
- One stitch marker, optional
- Tape measure for checking gauge and finished size
Instructions
- Gather your yarn, hook, scissors, yarn needle, and tape measure.
- Make a slip knot, then chain 43.
- Yarn over, insert your hook into the second chain from the hook, and pull up a loop. Yarn over again and pull through all three loops to make a half double crochet, or hdc. Repeat across the chain. You will have 42 half double crochet stitches.
- Chain 1, then turn your work. Work one half double crochet into the first stitch and continue across, placing the last stitch into the final half double crochet from the previous row. Row 2 has 42 stitches.
- Continue chaining 1 and turning at the end of each row. Work one half double crochet in every stitch across, stopping after you have completed 40 rows total.
- After the last half double crochet, cut the yarn, leaving a tail about 6 inches (15 cm) long. Pull the tail through the final loop to secure it.
- Thread the yarn needle and weave each tail back and forth through the wrong side of the fabric, changing direction once or twice.
- Measure the piece while it lies flat. If needed, gently pin it to 12 by 16 inches (30 by 41 cm) and let it dry naturally.
Notes
This project is suitable for a confident beginner and is intended to be calming and meditative. Use caution with small parts if giving to children.
