Description

This Baby to Kid Crochet Hat is a practical, cozy project that combines ribbed crochet cuff techniques with textured patterns suitable for young children. It’s a fantastic handmade gift for various occasions.

Ingredients

  • 1 skein of RED HEART® Designer Sport yarn
  • 5mm crochet hook
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors (optional)
  • Stitch markers (optional)

Instructions

  1. Chain 15.
  2. Work 1 sc in the second chain from the hook and in each chain across. You should have 14 sc.
  3. For Row 1, chain 1 and turn.
  4. Working in the back loop only, sc in each stitch across. Turn at the end of the row.
  5. Repeat Row 1 until the cuff measures 18 inches from the beginning.
  6. Turn the cuff so you can work along its long edge.
  7. Single crochet 54 stitches evenly across the long edge.
  8. For Row 1, chain 2 and work 1 hdc in each stitch across. Turn.
  9. For Row 2, chain 2. Repeat the following sequence across: hdc in the next 2 hdc, Fphdc in the next stitch, and hdc in the next 3 hdc. Turn.
  10. For Row 3, chain 2 and work 1 hdc in each stitch across. Turn.
  11. For Rows 4–7, repeat Rows 2 and 3.
  12. Continue with Rows 8–18 according to the provided pattern instructions.
  13. Fasten off at the end of the final row.
  14. Fold the piece so the back edges meet.
  15. Use the yarn needle to sew the back seam.
  16. At the cuff, reverse the sewing direction so the seam does not show when the cuff is folded upward.
  17. Weave in all yarn ends securely.
  18. Hold two strands of yarn together.
  19. Chain 30.
  20. Fasten off and weave the tie under each Fphdc stitch three rows from the last row.
  21. Pull the tie tightly and knot it to secure it.

Notes

Check that the tie is firmly attached and that no loose loops are accessible to a child. For babies and very young children, always supervise wear and follow current child-safety guidance regarding cords and ties.
