Description
This project provides a soothing crafts experience while creating a practical phone case using granny square techniques.
Ingredients
- About 120 yards of worsted weight yarn (weight 4, medium)
- One H-8 (5.0 mm) crochet hook
- One yarn needle for weaving in the ends
- Sharp scissors
- One stitch marker (optional)
- A tape measure for checking the phone and finished fabric
- One 0.75-inch button
- A small amount of sewing thread and a hand-sewing needle for attaching the button
Instructions
- Make a magic ring, chain 2, then work 10 hdc into the ring. Pull the yarn tail gently to close the center, join with a sl st to the top of the first hdc, and fasten off if you want a color change.
- Join the next color in any stitch. Chain 2, work 2 hdc in the same stitch, chain 1, then work 3 hdc in each of the next 9 stitches, placing chain 1 between each group. Join with a sl st to the top of the first hdc.
- For the third round, slip stitch into the next chain-1 space. Chain 2, work 2 hdc in that space, chain 1, then work 3 hdc in the same space. Continue around by working 3 hdc, chain 1, 3 hdc in each space. Join with a sl st to the first hdc group, then fasten off.
- Weave in the center tail and color tails now, while the square is still easy to hold. Thread each tail onto the yarn needle and pass it through several stitches on the wrong side. Trim the excess without cutting into the fabric.
- Fold the square in half so two edges meet and the color pattern faces outward. Use stitch markers to hold both sides. Join the side edges with sl st through both layers, starting from the bottom corner toward the top. Keep the top edge open for the phone.
- At the end of the first side seam, continue across the bottom edge with sl st through both layers. Turn the case right side out.
- For the flap, attach the yarn at the center back of the top edge. Chain 2, then work 22 hdc evenly across the top edge. Turn.
- Work the flap rows in hdc. Chain 2, turn, and work 22 hdc across. Repeat for 6 rows total.
- Shape the buttonhole on the seventh row. Chain 2, hdc in the first 8 stitches, chain 3, skip 3 stitches, then hdc in the remaining 11 stitches.
- Work the final flap row. Chain 2, turn, hdc in the first 8 stitches, work 3 hdc into the chain-3 space, then hdc in the final 11 stitches. Fasten off, leaving a 10-inch tail for weaving in.
- For a simple edge, join yarn at one top corner and work one round of sc around the flap and upper case edge. Join with a sl st.
- Sew the button to the front of the case, lining it up with the buttonhole.
- If your cotton blend looks uneven, lightly dampen the case and shape it flat with your fingers. Let it dry flat.
- Weave in every remaining end, then trim the tails.
Notes
The project is suitable for a confident beginner and the gauge swatch should be completed before starting the phone case.
