Description

This simple hooded dog sweater project provides a calming and useful item for your pet, perfect for cool weather walks or cozy evenings at home.

Ingredients

  • Worsted weight yarn (weight 4, medium), about 360 yards total
  • H-8 (5.0 mm) crochet hook
  • Yarn needle with a blunt tip for weaving in ends
  • Sharp scissors
  • Tape measure
  • 2 optional stitch markers

Instructions

  1. Check the fit first. Measure from the base of the neck to the start of the tail, then measure around the widest part of the chest.
  2. Begin with the foundation chain. Make 42 chains, or ch 42.
  3. Work the first body row. Turn the chain and make 1 double crochet in the fourth chain from the hook. Make 1 double crochet in each chain across. You will have 40 double crochet stitches at the end of Row 1.
  4. Build the back panel. Chain 3, which counts as the first double crochet, and turn. Make 1 double crochet in each stitch across. Repeat this row until you have 18 rows total.
  5. Shape the neck area. Chain 3 and turn. Double crochet in the next 17 stitches, then make 2 double crochet together across the next 2 stitches. Continue with 1 double crochet in each remaining stitch.
  6. Make the first shoulder section. Chain 3 and turn. Double crochet in the next 16 stitches, then make 2 double crochet together across the next 2 stitches. Finish with 1 double crochet in each remaining stitch.
  7. Finish the shoulder edge. Chain 3 and turn. Make 1 double crochet in each stitch across.
  8. Return to the opposite shoulder. Join the yarn with a slip stitch near the center of the neck edge, then chain 3. Work across the remaining 18 stitches with 1 double crochet in each stitch.
  9. Shape the second shoulder. Chain 3 and turn. Make 1 double crochet in each stitch across for 18 stitches, then shape as previous.
  10. Join the shoulder area. Place the two shoulder sections with the right side facing you to sew the shoulder edges together.
  11. Form the hood. Attach yarn at the back neck edge and chain 3. Work 1 double crochet in each stitch around the neck opening, adding 2 double crochet at each corner.
  12. Close the hood seam. Fold the hood so the right side faces inward. Slip stitch or sew them with a yarn needle.
  13. Finish the lower edge and arm openings. Join yarn at one lower side edge and work 1 round of single crochet around the body opening and each leg opening.
  14. Weave in the ends and block if needed. Thread each tail onto the yarn needle to weave it through several stitches.

Notes

This sweater is suitable for small dogs with a straight back. Check for comfort around the neck and legs. A gauge swatch should be made before starting to ensure proper fit.
