Description

Make a soft ribbed crochet pumpkin with simple US stitches, gentle shaping, and calm fall charm for your home or a thoughtful gift.

Ingredients

  • Worsted weight yarn (weight 4, medium), about 170 yards per 100 g skein; you need about 85 yards, or 50 g
  • H-8 (5.0 mm) crochet hook
  • Small amount of worsted weight yarn in brown, tan, or green for the stem, about 8 yards
  • Polyester fiberfill, about 2 ounces (57 g)
  • Yarn needle with a rounded tip for sewing and weaving in the ends
  • Scissors
  • One stitch marker, optional
  • Tape measure for checking gauge and finished size

Instructions

  1. Make a foundation chain by forming 30 chain stitches, or ch.
  2. Row 1: Work one half double crochet, or hdc, in the second chain from the hook and in each chain across.
  3. Row 2: Chain 1 for the turning chain, then turn your work. Work one hdc in the back loop only, or BLO, of every stitch across.
  4. Rows 3 through 30: Repeat Row 2. Each row begins with ch 1, then one hdc in the BLO of every stitch across.
  5. At the end of Row 30, cut the yarn, leaving a tail about 24 inches (61 cm) long. Pull the tail through the last loop.
  6. Sew the short ends of the rectangle together with small whipstitches.
  7. Use the long tail to gather one open end and pull the yarn slowly until the opening closes.
  8. Turn the tube right side out and add polyester fiberfill in small handfuls.
  9. Use the same long tail to gather the remaining open end and secure it.
  10. Make the stem with brown or green yarn. Chain 7, then slip stitch, or sl st, in the second chain from the hook and in each chain across.
  11. Roll the stem into a small tube and sew the bottom closed.
  12. Sew the stem securely to the top center of the pumpkin.
  13. Shape the pumpkin by threading a fresh length of matching yarn through the center top and down through the center bottom. Pull gently to create shallow sections between the ridges.
  14. Weave in every end.

Notes

This project is decorative, not a toy, so keep it away from children under three because small parts and loose ends can create a safety risk.
