Description

This simple crochet apple pumpkin is sized for a shelf, seasonal bowl, or small gift, with enough texture to feel satisfying but not so much counting that you lose the restful rhythm.

Ingredients

  • 90 yards worsted weight yarn (weight 4, medium), preferably cotton or a cotton-acrylic blend
  • H-8 (5.0 mm) crochet hook
  • 1 ounce (28 g) polyester fiberfill
  • yarn needle with a large eye
  • sharp scissors
  • 1 stitch marker (optional)
  • tape measure
  • small scrap of contrasting yarn (optional) for marking the beginning of a round

Instructions

  1. Make a magic ring. Chain 1, then work 8 half double crochet into the ring.
  2. Pull the yarn tail to close the center, but do not weave it in yet. You have 8 stitches.
  3. Round 2: Work 2 hdc in each stitch around (16 stitches).
  4. Round 3: Work 2 hdc in the first stitch, then 1 hdc in the next stitch. Repeat around (24 stitches).
  5. Round 4: Work 2 hdc in the first stitch, then 1 hdc in each of the next 2 stitches. Repeat around (32 stitches).
  6. Rounds 5 through 10: Work 1 hdc in each stitch around (32 stitches each round).
  7. Round 11: Work 1 hdc in each of the next 2 stitches, then make 1 decrease over the next 2 stitches (24 stitches).
  8. Round 12: Work 1 hdc in the next stitch, then make 1 decrease over the next 2 stitches (16 stitches).
  9. Pause and add the polyester fiberfill, using small pinches.
  10. Round 13: Make 1 decrease over the next 2 stitches around (8 stitches).
  11. Cut the yarn, leaving an 8-inch tail. Weave it through the front loops of the remaining 8 stitches to close the opening.
  12. For the stem: Join the brown or green yarn near the top center with a slip stitch. Chain 6, then slip stitch in the second chain from the hook and in each remaining chain. Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing.
  13. For the leaf: Chain 7. Work 1 single crochet in the second chain from the hook, 1 half double crochet, 2 double crochet, and 1 half double crochet in the next chains. Work 1 sc in the last chain. Turn and work the same stitches along the other side of the foundation chain.
  14. Sew the stem and leaf securely to the top of the apple pumpkin. Weave in the ends.

Notes

This project is beginner-friendly and uses US crochet terms. If you substitute another worsted weight yarn, expect a slight change in texture and drape.
