Description

A fun and educational craft activity that combines creativity and science by making colorful butterfly decorations using chromatography.

Ingredients

  • Coffee filters (white or unbleached)
  • Washable markers (variety of colors)
  • Water (in a spray bottle or dish)
  • Pipe cleaners (for the butterfly’s body)
  • Scissors (optional, for trimming if needed)
  • Paper towel (to absorb excess water)

Instructions

  1. Lay a coffee filter flat on a clean surface and use washable markers to draw colorful designs on the filter.
  2. Lightly spray or sprinkle water onto the filter and observe the colors spread and blend.
  3. Place the wet filter on a paper towel to absorb excess water and allow it to dry completely (about 30 minutes).
  4. Once dry, pinch the filter in the middle to create a butterfly shape and secure it with a pipe cleaner.
  5. Fluff the wings and bend the pipe cleaner for antennae. Hang your butterfly or arrange them as you like!

Notes

Use metallic or neon markers for unique effects. You can create other shapes like insects or flowers.
