Description
This cozy crochet project allows you to create a small black cat hanging decoration that’s perfect for Halloween. The rhythmic pattern is easy to follow and can be completed over a few relaxing evenings.
Ingredients
- 90 yards of worsted weight yarn (weight 4, medium), 100% acrylic (45 yards orange, 30 yards black, 10 yards cream, 5 yards pink)
- 1 H-8 (5.0 mm) crochet hook
- 1 yarn needle with a rounded tip
- Sharp scissors
- 1 stitch marker (optional)
- Tape measure
- Small amount of polyester fiberfill
- 2 9 mm safety eyes (or embroidered eyes)
- Small scrap of pink worsted weight yarn for the nose
Instructions
- With orange yarn, make a magic ring. Chain 1, then work 6 single crochet into the ring.
- Pull the yarn tail gently to close the center. Join with a slip stitch to the first single crochet, and place a stitch marker in the first stitch (you have 6 stitches).
- For Round 2, chain 1. Work an increase in every stitch (2 single crochet in each stitch around). Join with a slip stitch (you have 12 stitches).
- For Round 3, chain 1. Repeat single crochet in the next stitch and an increase in the following stitch around (you have 18 stitches).
- For Round 4, chain 1. Repeat single crochet in each of the next 2 stitches, then make an increase in the next stitch around (you have 24 stitches).
- For Round 5, chain 1. Repeat single crochet in each of the next 3 stitches, then make an increase in the next stitch around (you have 30 stitches).
- For Rounds 6 through 10, chain 1 and work 1 single crochet in each stitch around (keep 30 stitches in each round).
- Before closing the face, insert the safety eyes between Rounds 7 and 8, leaving about 7 stitches between them. Add a few strands of black yarn for whiskers if desired. Add polyester fiberfill inside.
- For Round 11, chain 1, then repeat single crochet in the next 3 stitches and a decrease over the next 2 stitches around (you have 24 stitches).
- For Round 12, chain 1, then repeat single crochet in the next 2 stitches and a decrease over the next 2 stitches around (you have 18 stitches). Add more stuffing if needed.
- For Round 13, chain 1, then repeat single crochet in the next stitch and a decrease over the next 2 stitches around (you have 12 stitches).
- For Round 14, chain 1, then work a decrease over the next 2 stitches around. Join with a slip stitch, cut the yarn leaving an 8-inch tail, and pull the tail through the final loop. Use the yarn needle to close the opening and weave in the end.
- Make the ears with black yarn. Chain 7 for the foundation chain, single crochet in the second chain from the hook and in each chain across (6 stitches).
- For Ear Row 2, single crochet across (6 stitches). For Ear Row 3, skip the first stitch, single crochet across, chain 1, and turn. Continue decreasing one stitch at the beginning of each row until 1 stitch remains. Fasten off with a long sewing tail.
- Repeat for the second ear. Lay the ears behind the top of the orange face and sew in place with black yarn.
- Embroider a small cream triangle inside each ear, then use pink yarn to stitch a tiny triangle nose and black yarn for a smiling mouth.
- For the hanging loop, attach black yarn at the top center of the face. Chain 18, then slip stitch into the same point to form a loop. Fasten off and weave in ends.
Notes
Be patient with the face details and ensure the safety eyes are securely attached if giving to a child. This project is suitable for beginners with basic crochet knowledge.
