Description
Create a fun and customizable glowing bounce ball using simple materials and learn about chemistry in the process!
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup of warm water
- 1/4 cup of white school glue
- 1/4 cup of Borax (sodium borate)
- Food coloring (various colors)
- Glow-in-the-dark paint (optional)
- Mixing bowl
- Plastic container with a lid (for storage)
- Rubber gloves (optional but recommended)
- Baking sheet or wax paper (for drying)
Instructions
- Prepare the Borax Solution: In a mixing bowl, dissolve 1 tablespoon of Borax in 1 cup of warm water. Stir until the Borax is completely dissolved, then set aside.
- Mix the Glue: In another bowl, combine 1/4 cup of white school glue with 1/4 cup of warm water. Add a few drops of food coloring to achieve your desired shade. Mix well.
- Combine Mixtures: Slowly pour the Borax solution into the glue mixture while stirring continuously. Observe how the mixture begins to thicken and form a gel-like texture.
- Knead the Ball: Once the mixture has thickened, use your hands (gloved if desired) to knead it until it’s a cohesive ball. If you’d like to create a swirl effect, divide the mixture into several colors and layer them before kneading.
- Dry and Store: Place the ball on a baking sheet or wax paper and let it dry for 12-24 hours. Store your bounce balls in a plastic container with a lid to keep them fresh.
Notes
Experiment with different colors and glow effects! For added fun, mix in glitter or essential oils.
