Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • Food coloring (various colors)
  • String (optional for hanging)
  • Pencil (optional for hanging)

Instructions

  1. Combine 2 cups of granulated sugar with 1 cup of water in a medium saucepan.
  2. Heat over medium heat, stirring gently until the sugar dissolves completely.
  3. Remove from heat and divide the sugar solution into separate bowls, adding food colors.
  4. Pour each colored solution into a clean glass jar, layering the colors.
  5. Drop a clean piece of string into the jar, tying the other end to a pencil resting across the top.
  6. Leave the jar in a warm, undisturbed place for several days.
  7. Watch as the sugar begins to crystallize over the next few days.

Notes
