Description

Create memorable salt dough handprint ornaments with this simple recipe, perfect for holiday decorations or gifts.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup salt
  • 2 cups water
  • Mixing bowl and spoon
  • Rolling pin
  • Baking sheet
  • Cookie cutter or your hands for imprinting
  • Optional: Acrylic paints, ribbon, and varnish for finishing

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine 2 cups of flour and 1 cup of salt.
  2. Gradually add 2 cups of water, stirring until a sticky dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough for 5–10 minutes until smooth and pliable.
  4. On a clean surface, dust lightly with flour and use a rolling pin to flatten the dough to about 1/4 inch thick.
  5. Press your child’s hand firmly into the dough to create an impression.
  6. Use a cookie cutter to shape the dough around the handprint and make a small hole at the top for hanging.
  7. Place the ornaments on a baking sheet and bake at 200°F (93°C) for 2–3 hours or until completely hard.
  8. Once cool, paint and decorate the ornaments as desired. Allow paints to dry, then apply a layer of varnish for shine.

Notes

Custom colors can be added by mixing food coloring into the dough. Consider using ribbon for hanging and adding a personal note when gifting.
