Description

A delightful treat that’s fun to make and eat, perfect for introducing kids to the science of crystallization.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 to 2 teaspoons food coloring (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon flavored extract (like vanilla or mint)
  • Wooden skewers or cotton string
  • Glass jar or container
  • Clothespins or clips

Instructions

  1. Soak wooden skewers in water for 30 minutes to 1 hour. Then, roll the wet skewers in sugar to create a textured surface.
  2. In a saucepan, mix 2 cups of sugar with 1 cup of water over medium heat, stirring until completely dissolved. Do not boil.
  3. Remove from heat and add food coloring and flavored extract if desired.
  4. Allow the sugar solution to cool for about 10-15 minutes before pouring it into a jar.
  5. Insert the sugar-coated skewers into the jar, using clothespins to hold them above the bottom without touching the sides.
  6. Cover the jar with a cloth and place it in a cool, undisturbed location for 5 to 7 days to allow crystals to form.

Notes

Store rock candy in an airtight container in a cool, dry place to prevent stickiness.
