Ingredients

- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 1 cup water
- 1 to 2 teaspoons food coloring (optional)
- 1 teaspoon flavored extract (like vanilla or mint)
- Wooden skewers or cotton string
- Glass jar or container
- Clothespins or clips
Instructions
- Soak wooden skewers in water for 30 minutes to 1 hour. Then, roll the wet skewers in sugar to create a textured surface.
- In a saucepan, mix 2 cups of sugar with 1 cup of water over medium heat, stirring until completely dissolved. Do not boil.
- Remove from heat and add food coloring and flavored extract if desired.
- Allow the sugar solution to cool for about 10-15 minutes before pouring it into a jar.
- Insert the sugar-coated skewers into the jar, using clothespins to hold them above the bottom without touching the sides.
- Cover the jar with a cloth and place it in a cool, undisturbed location for 5 to 7 days to allow crystals to form.
Notes
Store rock candy in an airtight container in a cool, dry place to prevent stickiness.
