Description

A delightful craft combining science and artistry, making colorful sugar crystal eruptions.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • Food coloring (various colors)
  • Glass or clear plastic jars
  • Wooden sticks or skewers
  • Clothespins (optional)
  • Saucepan
  • Stove
  • Spoon for stirring
  • Measuring cups

Instructions

  1. In a saucepan, combine 2 cups of granulated sugar and 1 cup of water. Heat on medium until the sugar fully dissolves, stirring continuously.
  2. Once dissolved, remove from heat and add a few drops of food coloring. Mix for a rainbow effect!
  3. Allow the solution to cool for about 15 minutes.
  4. Pour the sugar solution into your jar, leaving some space at the top. Dip the stick into the solution, then roll it in some granulated sugar.
  5. Carefully place the sugar-coated stick into the jar, using a clothespin if necessary to keep it suspended. Ensure it doesn’t touch the sides of the jar.
  6. Place the jar in a cool, undisturbed location. Crystals will begin to form along the stick in a few days.
  7. After several days, check back to see the colorful crystals grow. Once they reach your desired size, remove the stick and celebrate!

Notes

Tips: Mix food colors for unique shades, experiment with stick shapes or flavored crystals, and document the growth process.
