A delightful craft combining science and artistry, making colorful sugar crystal eruptions.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 1 cup water
- Food coloring (various colors)
- Glass or clear plastic jars
- Wooden sticks or skewers
- Clothespins (optional)
- Saucepan
- Stove
- Spoon for stirring
- Measuring cups
Instructions
- In a saucepan, combine 2 cups of granulated sugar and 1 cup of water. Heat on medium until the sugar fully dissolves, stirring continuously.
- Once dissolved, remove from heat and add a few drops of food coloring. Mix for a rainbow effect!
- Allow the solution to cool for about 15 minutes.
- Pour the sugar solution into your jar, leaving some space at the top. Dip the stick into the solution, then roll it in some granulated sugar.
- Carefully place the sugar-coated stick into the jar, using a clothespin if necessary to keep it suspended. Ensure it doesn’t touch the sides of the jar.
- Place the jar in a cool, undisturbed location. Crystals will begin to form along the stick in a few days.
- After several days, check back to see the colorful crystals grow. Once they reach your desired size, remove the stick and celebrate!
