Description

Engage in a colorful chemistry experience with Rainbow Rainfall Geyser Jars, perfect for all ages. This hands-on project combines art and science as you explore density and chemical reactions.

Ingredients

  • Clear glass jars or plastic containers (1 per geyser)
  • Food coloring (various colors)
  • Water
  • Cooking oil (vegetable or canola)
  • Baking soda
  • Vinegar
  • Funnel (optional)
  • Measuring spoons
  • Stirring stick or spoon

Instructions

  1. Gather all your materials in a clean, dry workspace. Ensure your jars are clear for optimal viewing.
  2. Fill each jar 1/3 full with water. Add 5-10 drops of food coloring to each jar and stir gently with a stick to mix.
  3. Slowly pour cooking oil on top of the colored water, filling the jar to about 2/3 full.
  4. In a small bowl, mix 1 tablespoon of baking soda with 1-2 tablespoons of vinegar. Use a funnel to pour the baking soda mixture into the jar.
  5. Stand back and watch as your geyser erupts in a stunning array of colors!

Notes

Experiment with different color combinations and container shapes for unique geyser effects. This activity is safe for children but should be supervised due to the use of vinegar and baking soda.
