Description

A delightful DIY project that combines science and art, perfect for illustrating density and solubility while creating a beautiful display.

Ingredients

  • Clear glass jar or container
  • Water
  • Cooking oil (such as vegetable or canola oil)
  • Food coloring (various colors)
  • Alka-Seltzer tablets (or effervescent tablets)
  • Spoon for stirring

Instructions

  1. Pour water into the jar, filling it about 3/4 full.
  2. Slowly add cooking oil on top of the water to create a layer.
  3. Using a dropper or spoon, add drops of food coloring in various spots on the oil layer.
  4. Gently stir to swirl the food coloring, keeping the layers somewhat separate.
  5. Break an effervescent tablet into quarters and drop one piece into the jar to watch the ‘rain’ fall from the cloud!

Notes

Use different colors for unique patterns. Try adding flavored sparkling water instead of plain for an interesting twist.
