Description

Create a mesmerizing lava lamp using simple materials, exploring science and creativity.

Ingredients

  • Clear plastic bottle or jar with a lid
  • Water
  • Vegetable oil
  • Food coloring (multiple colors)
  • Baking soda
  • Vinegar
  • Flashlight or black light (optional)
  • Glitter (optional)

Instructions

  1. Fill the bottle three-quarters full with water.
  2. Slowly pour vegetable oil into the bottle until it reaches the rim. Wait for the oil to settle on top of the water.
  3. Choose a food coloring and add several drops to the water layer.
  4. In a separate cup, mix 1 tablespoon of baking soda with a small amount of vinegar, forming bubbles.
  5. Quickly pour the baking soda-vinegar mix into the bottle to create colorful “lava” bubbles.
  6. If desired, shine a flashlight or black light on your lava lamp to enhance the glow effect.

Notes

Experiment with different colors and add glitter for additional sparkle.
