Description

A delightful craft activity that combines imaginative play and learning, introducing children to chemistry with a fun volcano eruption made from homemade play dough.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 cup salt
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons cream of tartar
  • Food coloring (any color)
  • Baking soda (for the eruption)
  • Vinegar (for the eruption)
  • Optional: small plastic volcano mold or cup

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, combine flour, salt, cream of tartar, and vegetable oil. Gradually add water and mix to a smooth consistency.
  2. Place the saucepan over medium heat and stir continuously as the dough thickens.
  3. Once the dough has cooled slightly, add a few drops of your chosen food coloring and knead until the color is evenly distributed.
  4. Shape the colored dough into a volcano form, ensuring there’s a hollowed top for the eruption.
  5. Sprinkle a generous amount of baking soda inside the hollowed area of the volcano.
  6. Pour vinegar into the hollowed area to watch the bubbling reaction create a colorful flow of “lava!”

Notes

Customize colors, swap materials, or take it outside for easy cleanup. Enjoy adding glitter or confetti for a fun visual effect!
