Description

Create a captivating mini volcano using common household ingredients while exploring basic chemistry principles.

Ingredients

Scale
  • Empty glass jar or clear plastic container
  • 23 tablespoons of baking soda
  • ½ cup of vinegar
  • Food coloring (optional)
  • Dish soap (optional)
  • Tray or large dish to catch overflow
  • Spoon or small measuring cup

Instructions

  1. Prepare Your Workspace: Lay down a protective layer, like newspapers or a tray.
  2. Create the Volcano Base: Place the empty jar in the center of the tray. Spoon 2-3 tablespoons of baking soda into the jar. Optionally, drizzle a few drops of dish soap to create thicker lava.
  3. Mix the Lava: Add several drops of food coloring to the baking soda for color and pour about ½ cup of vinegar into a small cup.
  4. Erupt the Volcano: Slowly pour the vinegar into the jar with the baking soda. Stand back and enjoy the bubbling reaction!

Notes

Experiment with different food coloring combinations for a rainbow effect. You can also add glitter for extra sparkle.
