Description

Create a sparkling window garland using simple ingredients to witness the magic of crystallization.

Ingredients

  • Granulated sugar (about 2 cups)
  • Water (1 cup)
  • A heat-safe container (like a mason jar)
  • Wooden skewer sticks or cotton strings
  • Ribbon (for hanging the garland)
  • Food coloring (optional)
  • A saucepan (for boiling)
  • A spoon (for stirring)
  • A tray or cloth (for catching drips)

Instructions

  1. Dip the wooden skewers or strings in water, then roll them in sugar. Set aside to dry for 15 minutes.
  2. In a saucepan, boil 1 cup of water. Gradually stir in 2 cups of granulated sugar until fully dissolved.
  3. If desired, add a few drops of food coloring to the syrup and stir well.
  4. Pour the sugar solution into your heat-safe container, leaving some space at the top. Carefully place the sugared skewers or strings into the solution.
  5. Cover the container with a paper towel to keep out dust and let it sit undisturbed in a cool, dark place for about 7-10 days.
  6. Once crystals have formed, remove the skewers/strings and let them dry completely. Tie the crystal pieces together using ribbon to create a garland.

Notes

Experiment with different colors of food coloring and shapes of containers for unique displays. Consider adding flavor extracts for scented garlands.
