Description

A fun and educational project to create stunning crystal snowflakes using simple materials, perfect for all ages.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup Borax
  • 2 cups water
  • Pipe cleaners (preferably white or clear)
  • String
  • A pencil or stick (to suspend the snowflake)
  • A glass jar (wide mouth, quart-size recommended)
  • Food coloring (optional)
  • Scissors

Instructions

  1. Shape the Pipe Cleaners: Twist together several pipe cleaners to form a snowflake shape with six arms in a star pattern.
  2. Attach String: Cut a 12-inch piece of string, tie one end securely to the snowflake’s center.
  3. Heat Water: Boil 2 cups of water in a pot until steaming.
  4. Add Borax: Gradually stir in 1 cup of Borax until fully dissolved.
  5. Add Color (Optional): If desired, add a few drops of food coloring to the solution and stir well.
  6. Suspend the Snowflake: Place the snowflake into the glass jar, using a pencil or stick to suspend it in the center.
  7. Let Crystals Form: Set the jar in a cool place undisturbed and allow crystals to form over several hours or overnight.

Notes

Experiment with different shapes of pipe cleaners and food coloring for unique designs. Consider making several jars for a winter display.
