Description

An engaging hands-on project to create a crystal-growing tree using simple materials, combining art and chemistry for a fun learning experience.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup of water
  • 3 tablespoons of white sugar
  • 3 tablespoons of Epsom salt
  • 1 tablespoon of corn syrup
  • Small branch or twigs (for the tree structure)
  • String or thread
  • Small bowl
  • A heat source (stove or microwave)
  • Food coloring (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, heat the water until it’s hot (but not boiling). Stir in the sugar and Epsom salt until fully dissolved. Add the corn syrup and food coloring if desired.
  2. Take your small branch or twigs and tie the string around them to form your tree shape, ensuring it is sturdy.
  3. Dip your tree structure into the solution, ensuring it is fully coated and allow any excess to drip back into the bowl.
  4. Place your tree onto a secure surface where it won’t be disturbed and leave it in a cool, dry place.
  5. After a few hours or overnight, check for crystal formation on the tree.

Notes

Customize colors with different food colorings, experiment with various salts for texture, and add glitter or sequins for decoration.
