Description
An engaging science experiment and craft project to create stunning borax crystal gems at home.
Ingredients
- Borax powder
- Water
- Glass jar or container (clear)
- String or pipe cleaners (twisted into shapes)
- Pencil or stick (to suspend the string)
- Food coloring (optional)
- Stove or hot water source
- Stirring utensil
- Measurement tools (cup and spoon)
Instructions
- Heat Water: Bring 1 cup of water to a boil on the stove.
- Mix Borax: Gradually add 3 tablespoons of borax powder to the boiling water, stirring continuously until dissolved.
- Shape Your Base: Twist pipe cleaners into desired shapes or use a string tied to a pencil.
- Suspend Your Shape: Attach the shape to the pencil so that it hangs into the borax solution without touching the jar’s bottom or sides.
- Pour the Solution: Carefully pour the dissolved borax solution into the glass jar, ensuring the shape is fully submerged.
- Patience Is Key: Leave the jar undisturbed for 6-24 hours to allow crystals to form.
- Check Progress: After several hours, check to see the crystals growing.
- Remove the Crystals: Once satisfied with the size, take out the crystals and let them dry on a paper towel.
- Admire Your Work: Place them in sunlight or display them creatively.
Notes
Experiment with colors, shapes, and different containers to create unique designs. Store crystals in a dry place away from direct sunlight.
