Description
A colorful science experiment illustrating the principles of density and absorption through a visually stunning display.
Ingredients
- Clear glass or plastic jar
- Whipped cream (or shaving cream as an alternative)
- Food coloring (variety of colors)
- Water
- Droppers or pipettes
- A tray or a surface to catch spills
- Spoon or stick (for stirring)
Instructions
- Fill the jar about three-quarters full with water. Carefully spoon a generous layer of whipped cream on top of the water.
- Using droppers, drop a mix of food coloring on top of the whipped cream.
- As the colors pool, watch for them to start sinking and discuss sensory cues.
- Observe as the food coloring saturates the whipped cream and creates a ‘rain’ effect in the water below.
Notes
Experiment with different food coloring combinations and discuss real weather phenomena. Supervision is necessary for young children.
