Description

A colorful science experiment illustrating the principles of density and absorption through a visually stunning display.

Ingredients

  • Clear glass or plastic jar
  • Whipped cream (or shaving cream as an alternative)
  • Food coloring (variety of colors)
  • Water
  • Droppers or pipettes
  • A tray or a surface to catch spills
  • Spoon or stick (for stirring)

Instructions

  1. Fill the jar about three-quarters full with water. Carefully spoon a generous layer of whipped cream on top of the water.
  2. Using droppers, drop a mix of food coloring on top of the whipped cream.
  3. As the colors pool, watch for them to start sinking and discuss sensory cues.
  4. Observe as the food coloring saturates the whipped cream and creates a ‘rain’ effect in the water below.

Notes

Experiment with different food coloring combinations and discuss real weather phenomena. Supervision is necessary for young children.
