Description

Create a mesmerizing ‘Lightning Storm in a Jar’ using simple materials and learn about light, density, and chemical reactions.


Ingredients

  • A clear glass jar or container
  • Water
  • Vegetable oil (or baby oil)
  • Food coloring (blue, yellow, or purple)
  • Alka-Seltzer tablets or baking soda
  • Optional: a flashlight

Instructions

  1. Fill the jar about 1/2 full with water.
  2. Slowly pour vegetable oil over the water until the jar is three-quarters full.
  3. Add a few drops of food coloring and watch it burst through the oil.
  4. Break an Alka-Seltzer tablet into smaller pieces and drop them in or add baking soda and vinegar.
  5. For added effect, turn off the lights and shine a flashlight through the jar.

Notes

Experiment with different colors of food coloring, add glitter for sparkle, or use various container sizes for striking effects. Play storm sounds for ambiance.
