Description

Create a vibrant lava lamp suncatcher that adds a unique touch to your home decor while exploring science concepts like density and buoyancy.

Ingredients

  • Glass or clear plastic containers (e.g., jars or bottles)
  • Vegetable oil
  • Water
  • Food coloring (various colors)
  • Alka-Seltzer tablets or effervescent tablets
  • Glitter (optional)
  • Small funnel (optional)
  • Measuring cups
  • Spoon for stirring

Instructions

  1. Prepare Your Container: Select a clean glass or clear plastic container and ensure it’s dry and free from any residues.
  2. Fill Your Container: Pour about 1/3 cup of water into the container and add a few drops of food coloring. Stir until colored to your liking.
  3. Add the Oil: Carefully pour vegetable oil into the container, filling it until about 2 inches from the top.
  4. Create the Lava Effect: Drop in half a fizzy Alka-Seltzer tablet and observe the bubbles creating a lava lamp effect.
  5. Add Optional Glitter: Sprinkle a little glitter on top for extra sparkle.
  6. Seal it Up: Optionally, seal the container with a lid if desired.

Notes

Customize colors and experiment with different clear containers. This project is great for parties, classrooms, and family activities.
