Description

Create vibrant Lava Lamp Style Suncatchers that add colorful decor to your windows, combining art and science in a fun craft activity.

Ingredients

  • Clear plastic or glass jars (small)
  • Vegetable oil
  • Water
  • Food coloring (various colors)
  • Alka-Seltzer tablets (or similar effervescent tablets)
  • Glitter (optional)
  • Craft stick or spoon
  • Funnel (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare your jars by cleaning them thoroughly and ensuring they are dry. Fill each jar halfway with water using a funnel.
  2. Pour vegetable oil into the jars, filling them almost to the top to create the lava lamp effect.
  3. Add a few drops of food coloring into the jars and stir gently with a craft stick or let them sit for a layered look.
  4. If desired, sprinkle in some glitter for extra sparkle.
  5. Break an Alka-Seltzer tablet into small pieces, drop one piece into the jar, and watch the bubbles rise!
  6. Seal the lids tightly if using glass jars. Hang or place them by a window and enjoy your suncatcher.

Notes

Experiment with different food colorings and jar sizes. Add phosphorescent paint for a glow in the dark effect, or use baking soda and vinegar as an alternative to Alka-Seltzer for fizzing.
