Description

Create beautiful ice lanterns using simple materials to illuminate your space during the winter.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 large bowl (for the main lantern shape)
  • 1 smaller bowl (for creating the hollow center)
  • Water (tap or distilled)
  • Decorative items (pine needles, leaves, berries – optional)
  • Food coloring (optional)
  • Tea lights or LED candles (for lighting)

Instructions

  1. Choose two bowls; one large and one small. The small bowl will create a cavity for the lantern.
  2. Pour water into the large bowl until it’s about halfway full. Add decorative items such as pine needles, leaves, or berries for seasonal flair.
  3. Place the smaller bowl upside-down in the center of the large bowl. Weigh it down with stones if necessary to keep it in place.
  4. Place the entire setup in the freezer for 6-8 hours, or until completely frozen.
  5. Once frozen, take the bowl out of the freezer. Run warm water over the outside of the large bowl to help release the ice lantern.
  6. Carefully remove the smaller bowl from the center. Place a tea light or an LED candle inside the hollow space of your ice lantern.

Notes

Use LED candles to avoid melting the ice or creating a fire hazard. Experiment with different foliage or small ornaments for a unique look.
