Description

Create beautiful, sparkling Borax crystal gems in a fun and educational craft project that combines art and science.

Ingredients

  • Borax powder
  • Water
  • Glass jar or bowl
  • Pipe cleaners (in desired shapes)
  • Food coloring (optional)
  • String (if desired for hanging)
  • Spoon
  • Heat source (stove or kettle)

Instructions

  1. Heat about 2 cups of water in a kettle or pan until it reaches a boil.
  2. In the glass jar or bowl, add 3 tablespoons of Borax powder.
  3. Pour the boiling water into the jar with the Borax, stirring well until it’s completely dissolved.
  4. Twist the pipe cleaners into your desired shapes (stars, hearts, or abstract designs).
  5. If using food coloring, add a few drops to your solution and stir.
  6. Attach the shaped pipe cleaners to a string and hang them in the jar, ensuring they don’t touch the sides or bottom.
  7. Allow the jar to sit undisturbed for at least 6 hours or overnight for the best results.
  8. Check back to see your beautiful crystal gems forming around your pipe cleaner shapes!

Notes

Experiment with shapes and colors, and try using distilled water for clearer crystals.
